Wiccan Voodoo Witches

Posted by spiritedenterprise on June 5, 2013 at 12:40 AM

I am a very eclectic individual. I love magick and everything about it. I have read every magickal book I've ever laid my hands on - wicca, traditional, chaos, folk, hoodoo, voodoo, you name it.

I have apprenticed under practitioners who practice a completely different kind of magick than what I was raised with.

Have I incorporated some of what Ive learned into my practice, absolutely!

However...one thing you will never, EVER get me to believe is that Wiccans are practicing voodoo.

Im not going to make this very difficult - Take a look at the Wiccan laws or Wiccan Rede, if you rather - Pay close attention to the parts in bold.

The Wiccan Rede

Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust.

Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.

For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out.

To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme.

Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much.

Honor the Old Ones in deed and name,

let love and light be our guides again.

Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune.

Widdershins go when the moon doth wane,

and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane.

When the Lady's moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two.

When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart's desire seek.

Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail.

When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast.

When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth.

When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest.

Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.

Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows.

Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God's

insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower.

Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland.

Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.

Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning.

White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility.

Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine.

Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen.

Elder is the Lady's tree burn it not or cursed you'll be.

Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark.

As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it's now Samhain.

When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows.

When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn.

As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magick rite.

Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all.

When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules.

In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way.

When the Sun has reached it's height time for Oak and Holly to fight.

Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall.

Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you'll be.

Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you'll know.

When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed.

With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend.

Merry Meet and Merry Part bright the cheeks and warm the heart.

Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good.

When misfortune is enow wear the star upon your brow.

Be true in love this you must do unless your love is false to you.

These Eight words the Rede fulfill:

"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

An Ye Harm None - Did you read that right there?

If you are a Wiccan - a practitioner of white magick - then you wouldnt be doing dark voodoo.

Authentic voodoo involves the sacrifice of animals!!

Im not referring to voodoo or wiccans as a whole - I am talking about the practitioners that claim to be practitioners of the light aka "white wiccans" and then in their store offer extremely dark spells supposedly based on the voodoo tradition.

Can you incorporate certain methods from the voodoo tradition in your magick though you are not a practitioner of that tradition? Sure you can. I use some powders and oils in my magick that are voodoo recipes.

But to claim you are a wiccan that practices this kind of dark magick - it doesnt make any sense.

People that make this claim obviously haven't studied the religion.

In areas where voodoo is a religion, you'll often find religious centers where initiates of the voodoo tradition go to learn to communicate and work with the spirits (loa) through magick and common rites. In more remote places initiates often apprentice under a voodoo priest or priestess. It is quite common for entire families to practice and pass on their knowledge.

When an initiate starts their training, they are usually accepted into a "house." It is in this house that the initiation or kanzo takes place. Once that kanzo has taken place, you become known as a "hounsi kanzo" and you literally become a child of that house. The priestess becomes your mother or godmother in some circles and the priest becomes your father or godfather. This mother and father then teach you everything you need to know. They are responsible for you on all spiritual levels. They are responsible for not just your teaching but also your actions within the voodoo tradition.

Once you surpass the level of initiate, you move up through the degrees. These degrees sometimes vary by location but from what I know of Hatian voodoo, the following is the list of degrees.

Sur Point is the second degree. This position is titled houngan sur point for a male and mambo sur point for a female.

Asogwe is the highest and third degree. This position is titled as houngan aogwe or mambo asogwe.

I know there are classes that you can take online to get a certificate saying that you're a priest or priestess in the voodoo religion. But Im sorry, taking a 7 day online course and obtaining a certificate does NOT take the place of being a student under an actual person. In fact, some of these "courses" do not require you to learn a thing. All you do is pay a fee for a fancy looking document that states you are an ordained voodoo priest or priestess!!

Have some pride people! Don't steal a title that you do not deserve!!!

Lady Solunar - I agree with you. We're all witchy people at SE, but none of us are Wiccan. In the same sense that you're speaking, many Wiccans I know dont call themselves witches either. They dont take offense to the term, but its just not one that everyone uses to define themselves.

I'm late to this conversation, but I'd like to add my pennies: not all witches are Wiccan. I'm not Wiccan, but I'm very much a witch. I'm more of a folk magick / hedge witch / kitchen witch practitioner. However, I'm not above using grey or dark magick when it's truly necessary. Voodoo may be out of the realm of the followers of the Wiccan Rede (as I understand the Rede), but it isn't out of the realm of witches.

Personally, I'd like to speak to someone of the practice, ask questions and observe. Thus far, though, the opportunity to do so hasn't crossed my path. So, I remain an eclectic practitioner.

The voodoo that Im referring to in this article is dark voodoo - the wiccans that offer hexes, death spells, and other forms of extremely dark magick on their websites while claiming that they are practitioners of the light are a walking contradiction. Im not saying that voodoo as a whole is dark or that it doesnt have light-based aspects.

I respectively disagree! As with many spiritual paths, voodoo has many spiritual aspects both light, gray, & dark. Depending on the culture/people, & geographical location. The variations of voodoo are many. To classify voodoo in general as dark is incorrect & unfair. In the lighter variations of voodoo, there is a strong respect for one's ancestors, the loa, yourself, and one's surroundings. Regarding sacrificing animals, many religions/paths both light & dark have sacrificed animals in their practices. Myself, I have no need of such practices. But, that is my choice. Wicca has incorporated various magicks, beliefs, & practices from other cultures. Early Judiasm, Shamanism, Egyptian practices are perfect examples. So, if they can be incorporated in one's wiccan beliefs, why can't voodoo? It can! Decades ago, I identified myself as an eclectic wiccan who incorporates both Wicca, voodoo, & tetragrammation in my magicks & practices. Now, I have never sacrificed an animal. But, there are different types of sacrifices. The loa as with many intelligencies can be appeased in many ways. Many of which, without slaying an animal. Also, there are alternatives to killing an animal. If blood is needed, you can go to a local butcher and purchase fresh animal blood like lamb, calf, venison, etc. Usually kosher butcher shops are best. Rare, but best. If you need an actual animal. You can purchase from pet shops, frozen rodents, turtles, etc. They sell them as snake food. Again, when it comes to magick, you have to do what feels right for your own path. Which means you have to be sometimes resourceful. Especially for those of us who live in an urban setting. The loa as well as many intelligences do accept various types of offerings ranging from food, drink, etc. Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to study under another. To be an apprentice in whatever path/spirituality you choose. For many, it's a journey of self exploration. And teaching one self. Myself, I have grown in my life. And I no longer identify myself as a wiccan . If classification is needed, then a gray witch that serves the Divine. I will say that no matter the path you choose, make sure you do so seriously & honestly. Magicks is not a game nor is spirituality a fad. Thus, you will always determine one who takes his/her beliefs/magicks/practices with intergrity & those who do not! One's sincere connection to their spirituality may not be understood by others, doesn't make them or their path/magicks less credible. Blessings!
